In 1798, his father James and his two uncles, Amor and Henry, migrated from Gallatin County, Kentucky to North Hogan Creek in what is now Hogan Township, Dearborn County, Indiana.[1] Assumedly, his father migrated with the entire family and ostensibly, based on his date of birth of 29 May 1808 found in the family Bible records, James was born in Dearborn County, Indiana Territory. He gave Indiana as his place of birth in the censuses.
James had a strong connection with Gallatin County. He appears in records of both Dearborn County and Gallatin County off and on during his life.
He married his first wife, Sarah Daugherty in Gallatin County in 1825 when he was almost 17 years old.[2]The first Indiana record of him is 8 July 1829 when he was a Lieutenant in the Mounted Rangers of the Indiana Territory.[3] A year after his father died, in 1832, he was named in some deeds of conveyance of lands formerly owned by his father where he is listed as "of Dearborn County."[4] His next Indiana record was the 1840 census in Laughery Township, Dearborn County.[5]
In the 1850 census James (age 42) was in Center Township, Dearborn, Indiana, United States.[6]
