Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Alice (Bruce) Howard is a part of US Black heritage.

Alice G. Bruce was born about 1875 in West Virginia. She married Walter V. Howard on 22 February 1896 in Jefferson County, Ohio.[1]

In 1900 they already had 3 children, Gilbert, Elnora, and Jenneta. They lived in Steubenville with Walter's parents James and Nancy.[2] Gilbert died in 1903, but before 1910 Alice Marie, Floyd and Wilma joined the family.[3] Their last child, Edwin Edgar, was born in 1912. The family later moved to Los Angeles.

Research notes

The family is living in Los Angeles in 1920, but Walter's wife is listed as "John D."[4] Is it a mistake? Further records of Alice have not be found so far.

A possibly matching Alice Bruce is found in the 1880 census - 5 years old, black, listed in the household of Elizabeth Bruce, 48, as her grand-daughter. Grand district, Grant County, West Virginia.[5]
