Biography

Thomas was born in 1772.

yDNA Hints

We start with Walter H. Bruce of Madison Co., Ga. Per reliable family tradition he was b. 30 Aug 1798 and was the son of Thomas H. Bruce. Neither fact is proven anywhere, but his date of birth is consistent with Census records for Walter. Thomas H. Bruce has one son b. before 1800 according to the 1810 Census. There are no records of an estate for Thomas H. Bruce in Greenville Dt., SC or any land deeds that reveal family. Along comes yDNA. A direct all male line descendant of Walter was tested by FTDNA. The test results shared yDNA marker DYS576=17 with three other test takers. One of those test takers descends from James Bruce, b. abt. 1806 of Greenville Dt., SC. In addition, another test taker descends from Ignatius Bruce, b. 1780 and m. in 1799 in Culpeper Co., Va. Thomas H. Bruce appears in Culpeper Co., Va. in the personal tax digests from 1794-1800. He used his middle initial "H" only in 1794. Please see genealogyfacts.org for more records of the Bruce family in Culpeper Co.

Census Record Analysis

As mentioned above, there are no good estate records or estate substitutes for Thomas H. Bruce. The names I am adding as his children is based upon yDNA, plus Census Records, The first step of the census analysis was to list every Census in Greenville from 1810 to 1850. (Thomas H. Bruce is not found in 1820.) Some of the names were associated with an older Charles Bruce in familysearch.org. Those names were skipped over. After those names were excluded there was a Bruce male to fit in every census age bracket from the census records of Thomas H. Bruce with the exception of 1825 to 1830, which would have been his youngest child. Amazingly, there are no duplicates to confuse the issue. I know we always want more proof than this, but it is the best that we have at the moment.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
