Nolan Brumfield was born 22 May 1899 in Wayne County, West Virginia the son of Comodore Brumfield and Geneva Smith. His parents were living in separate households in 1900. Nolan, his sister Carrie and mother Geneva were living with her parents Wm H. and Martha E. Smith in the 1900 census for Wayne County, West Virginia. 
Nolan's mother apparently divorced Comodore Brumfield and re-married James Barbour in 1908. The 1910 census shows Nolan Brumfield, age 13, resided with his grandparents William and Martha Smith in Cabell County, West Virginia.
By 1930 Nolan was residing in Hamilton County, Ohio and working as a sheet metal worker. 1930 census Hamilton County, Ohio
