Madeleine Brun migrated from France to Acadia.

Madelaine Brun was baptized on January 25, 1645, at the parish of La Chausée, province of Poitou (today département de la Vienne), France.[1] Her mother's name on her baptism record is Vincende Breau.[2] She was the daughter of Vincent Brun and Renee Breau. The mother's name, Vincende, was also supported by White using a note from G. Massignon:
A Vincent Breau is godfather of Madeleine Brun, daughter of Vincent at de Vincende ["sic" for René] Breau (Rg la Chaussée [Poutou] 25 Jan 1645. It is probably the same as below (Les Parlers francais d'Acadie, Vol I , p. 53)
Around 1666, she married widower Guillaume Trahan.[2] She was about 21 years old. Guillaume was 65 and had two children from his previous marriage who were about 15 years older than Madeleine.
Between about 1667 and 1678, the couple had seven children: Guillaume, Jean-Charles, Alexandre, Marie, a daughter unknown, Jeanne, and Madeleine.[2]
The 1671 census of Port-Royal shows that Guillaume, age 60 [sic], and Madeleine, age 25, have three sons living at home, ages 1 to 4. They own 8 heads of cattle, 10 sheep and 5 "arpents" of land. She is also mentioned in her parents’ entry as married.[3]
Seven years later, the Trahan household has 3 boys and 3 girls.[4]
About 1684, Madeleine married Pierre Bezier dit Joan dit Lariviere according to Stephen White, who doesn't give a place for the marriage.[2][5] On August or November 1685, she gave birth to Susanne.[2]
In the 1686 census at Port-Royal, Madeleine Brun appeared twice.[6]
First, in 1686, at Port Royal, Magdelaine [sic] BRUN, aged 47 [sic], was living with her husband, Pierre JOAN [recte Pierre Bezier], aged 60, and their daughter, Susanne [sic], aged 2 months. Also living with her were six children from her first marriage to Guillaume Trahan: Guillaume, aged 19, Jean [recte Jean Charles], aged 17, Jean Charles, aged 15, Marie, aged 14, Jeanne [sic], aged 12, and Magdelaine [recte Alexandre Joseph], aged 9. They owned 2 guns and were living on 8 arpents of cultivable land with 10 cattle and 10 sheep.
Second, in 1686, at Port Royal, Magdelaine [sic] Brun, aged 45 [sic], was living without her husband, Pierre Bezier, but with their daughter, Susanne [sic] RIVIERRE, aged 5 months. Also living with her were her six children from her marriage to Guillaume Trahan: Guillaume Trahan, aged 20, Jean [recte Jean Charles], aged 20, Alexandre [recte Alexandre Joseph], aged 16, and three daughters. They owned 1 gun and were living on 2 arpents of cultivable land with 7 cattle and 3 sheep. This is a decrease in property compared with the first listing.
In 1693, Madeleine 48, and Pierre 70, were living in Port-Royal with her son-in-law Jacques Léger, and her daughter, Madeleine Trahan.[7]
The 1698 Census shows that Pierre, Madeleine, and their daughter Susanne were still living in Port-Royal.[8]
Madeleine died before the 1700 Census at Port Royal, according to the Declaration of relatives made at Belle-Ile-en-Mer.[2]

Research Notes

DNA. Madeleine Brun's mother was Marie Renée Breau. The Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project is conducting ongoing research to verify their origins. In 2010, Stephen White reported Marie Renée Breau had a Haplogroup H13a1a4. I don't know the details of how many of her descendants were tested to support this report. Ongoing test results are also reported here. As of May 2014, six descendants have consistently reported an H haplogroup, indicating European origins.

Madeleine BRUN, daughter of Vincent and Marie (BRAULT) BRUN [English style], married at Port Royal around 1660 to Charles ROBICHAUX, born in France, son of Louis ROBICHAUX (who was born in France about 1609 and died 3 Jan 1649, age 40 years, while on a trip to Québec, where he is buried). Source cited: (Bergeron, 7: 197). They had only daughters. Note: Both professional genealogists, Landry and Reader, along with Stephen White, do not attribute this marriage to Madeleine Brun. Only the two currently on the profile (Trahan and Bezier) are sourced.(Bourque-573 00:14, 9 November 2022 (UTC)) Also note that no burial record is found in Drouin for Louis Robichaux or Charles Robichaux. The only Charles Robichaud who died in 1702 in Port Royal was the son of a Charles Robichaud, not Louis.(Bourque-573 00:14, 9 November 2022 (UTC))

In the 1686 census at Port Royal, Bezier was listed as Joan, both Madeleine Brun and Madeleine Trahan were listed as Magdelaine, Jean Charles was listed as just Jean, Alexandre Joseph was listed as Jean Charles, Marie Jehanne was listed as Jeanne, Suzanne was listed as Susanne, and Madeleine Brun’s age of 41 was listed as 47. Note: The 1686 census shows Guillaume (born about 1667) as age 19, living with his stepfather, and age 20, 3 months later, living with only his mother. He is the oldest son in the household, and this is close to being correct. The next oldest brother is Jean (Jean Charles), who was born about 1668. He is shown at age 17 as Jean and at age 15 as Jean-Charles. Alexandre is not mentioned at all until he is living alone with his mother 3 months later (Susanne was 2 months old in the first entry and 5 months old in the second entry). Since Alexandre was 16 in the second entry, he must have been the 15-year-old Jean-Charles in the first entry. The confusion arises because the second-oldest brother, Jean, and Jean-Charles are the same person. Alexandre was born about 1670 and is the youngest of the three brothers. The note above in the 1686 census, where it says that Jean 17 years was entered a second time as Alexandre, should read that Jean-Charles 15 was entered a second time as Alexandre.

Profile lists death as about 1686, yet write-up says 1698 - 1700.

Good catch, Lance. The writeup has census sources and would be correct. I changed the date in the facts. Thank you for noting this.

The date of her birth is the 23rd. She was baptized on the 25th.

Thank you Angeline. Unless there is a source posted on Find a Grave that can be verified, we don't accept the memorial as a primary source. It is good to have a link to the memorial though. Thanks for the link.

Additionally, the baptism record doesn't give a date of birth and for someone born in the 1600's that would likely be the most reliable source for a date of birth.

Brun-755 and Brun-10 appear to represent the same person because: Same name. Birth estimates within a year. Same fatjher (also a duplicate. Mother is incorrect but phonetically similar last name. No other ideantifying information our sources substantiating Brun-755

Lebrun-60 and Brun-10 appear to represent the same person because: Same name Madeleine, LeBrun=Brun. Same parents, see especially research notes on mothers name Vincende on Brun-10. Spouse could be merged with Guillaume Trahan or disconnected altogether. Parents could be merged as there is no data in either parent of Lebrun-60. Any dates from Lebrun-60 would disappear with the merge as they are unsourced.

Brun-252 and Brun-10 appear to represent the same person because: In Ancestry, a family tree with these exact dates and locations of birth and death has Madeleine married to Pierre Bezier (1630-1688). (see research note) Since there is no other couple with those names who seems to have lived during that time and place, looks like a duplicate

of Madeleine Brun even though the dates are off.
