Biography

Notables Project
Dick Bruna is Notable.

Dick Bruna was a Dutch author, illustrator, and graphic designer who was widely acclaimed for his work as the creator of the popular children's book series Miffy.

Hendrikus Magdalenus Bruna was the son of Albert Willem Bruna and Johanna Clara Charlotte Erdbrink. Born on August 23, 1927, in Utrecht, Netherlands, Bruna initially started to pursue a career in drawing before his father forced him to attend secondary school. He eventually attended the Artibus Art School in Utrecht, where he studied design and illustration.

During his early career, Bruna worked with the Dutch publishing company A.W. Bruna & Zoon, which was founded by his grandfather, and created cover art for many of their books. Bruna gained international success with his creation of the character "Miffy" (Nijntje, in Dutch), a small white rabbit with a simple, minimalistic design. The first book featuring "Miffy" was published in 1955, and since then, the series has sold over 85 million copies worldwide, and has been translated into more than 50 languages.

Throughout his life, Bruna was honored with several awards and accolades, including the Golden Brush Award and the Silver Pencil Award. He also received a knighthood from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in recognition of his work as an illustrator and writer. Bruna passed away on February 16, 2017, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of inspiring children's literature that has entertained generations of young readers.

Hi,

Perhaps his wife Irene's profile could be updated to be more public, as she passed away in 2022? This is mentioned on his wikipedia and her obituary can be found here: https://www.online-familieberichten.nl/zoeken.asp?command=show&id=2007243

I've added the death date and update the birthdate as per that source, so the profile is now no longer unlisted. But as the death was recent, it is as Private with Public Family Tree.
