Biography

Andrew was born in 1835 in Tennessee.[1] In the 1850 census, he was listed with his presumed parents, Daniel and Merana Bruner, living in Greene County, Illinois.[2] Andrew attended Hiawatha College in Kentucky.[1] On Jan 4, 1864, he enlisted in the Union Army.[3] On Feb 10, 1864, he enrolled (mustered in) in New Albany, Indiana with Company E of the 13th Indiana Cavalry as a 2nd Lieutenant.[4] He resigned on Jan 11, 1865 due to a disability.[3][4]

On Nov 24, 1868 he married Mary A. (Spaulding) Slaten in Jerseyville, Jersey, Illinois.[5] The couple were listed in the 1870 census living in Woodville Township, Greene, Illinois.[6] Andrew listed his occupation as Physician.[6] On Feb 17 1875, Andrew graduated from the College of Physicians in Keokuk, Iowa.[1] In the 1880 census, the couple were listed in Carrollton, Greene, Illinois where Andrew was still occupied as a Physician.[7] In 1885, a biographical sketch of Andrew indicated that his was “engaged in mercantile pursuits” in Roodhouse, Greene, Illinois.[1] In 1887, Mary filed for divorce due to Andrew’s continuous state of intoxication.[8]

On Jun 24, 1893, Andrew was admitted into the Illinois Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home in Quincy, Adams, Illinois.[9] On Apr 19, 1894, the staff at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home aided Andrew with his last will and testament.[10] When Andrew was as whether “money and other things should be sent to,,, Mrs M. A. Bruner?” He answered, “no.”[10] The staff repeated the questions on the following day with the same answer. Andrew died on Apr 21, 1894[3] and was buried in the Sunset Cemetery at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home in Quincy.[11]
