Biography

Peter Brunner II was born in 1767 in New York, possibly in the area of Schodack or Schoharie, New York Colony. (See also Research Notes below.) [1]

Peter Brunner II was the son of Peter Brunner U.E. (abt.1735-bef.1797) and Geertruy (Wolfin) Bruner (abt.1738-).

Baptismal records for Schodack Church, Schodack Landing for 26 July 1772 show a Pieter Browner born to parents Pieter Browner and Geertruy Wolfin, with sponsors Johannes Muller and Elizabeth Schenchel. (No explanation has been provided by earlier researchers as to why there was a five-year gap between his (proven) year of birth and the date of the (claimed) baptism.) [2] [3]

His father, Peter Brunner U.E. (abt.1735-bef.1797), was farming at Albany Bush, Tryon County, New York Province at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, when he joined the King's Royal Rangers of New York (KRRNY). (For more information on the loyalist activities of his father Peter Brunner Sr., please see his profile.) [4] [5]

Peter Brunner II was 16 years old at the end of the war in 1783, and came north to Canada with his father, Peter Brunner Sr.

Peter Brunner II married Elizabeth Bauch (or Bouck, Bouk, Bouch) on 22 April 1792 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, Williamsburgh, Dundas, Upper Canada. Performed by Rev. Samuel Schwerdtfeger. [6]

On 27 October 1797, Peter Brunner II submitted two petitions for land:

The First Heir & Devisee Commission for the Eastern District 1797-1803 has Peter Pruner claiming 100 acres, west half of Lot 2, Concession 1 in Williamsburg Township in 1799.

Peter and Elizabeth had the following Children:
(Note that all baptismal records show the surname Brunner, including those later interpreted as Prunner.)

  1. Petrus "Peter" Prunner (1793-1857). Born 20/Bap 27 Oct 1793. [10] [1]
  2. Adam Brunner (1795-1873). Born 24/Bap 28 Nov 1795. [11] [12]
  3. Anna "Nancy" Brunner (1798-). Born 9/Bap 10 Jan. 1798. [13] [14]
  4. Catarina "Catherine" Prunner (1802-bef.1902). 9 Nov/ Bap 21 Dec 1802. [15] [16]
  5. Elizabeth Prunner (1804-1878). Born 23 Sept/Bap 6 Oct 1804. [17] [18]
  6. James Prunner (1809-1884). Born 20 Nov 1809/ Bap 3 April 1810. [19] [20]
  7. Polly Prunner (1812-bef.1912). Born 2 Jun/ Bap 5 July 1812. [21] [22]
  8. William Silas (Prunner) Pruner (1819-1899). Born Mar 22/ Bap 26 Oct 1819. [23] [24]
  9. John Prunner (abt.1800-abt.1879). No baptism record found. Land grant dated 2 March 1825. [25]
  10. Julie Ann Prunner (1798-1851). No baptism record found. Petitioned for land August 1833. Land grant dated 28 Oct. 1833, Williamsburg. [26]
  11. Margaret Prunner (1806-1878). No baptism record found. Petitioned for land 9 October 1832. Rejected. [27]

Peter Brunner II died in 1848 aged 85 years, 4 months. He is buried at Upper Canada Village Cemetery in Upper Canada Village, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry United Counties, Ontario, Canada. [28]

Research Notes

The Brunner / Prunner Family

This branch of the Brunner family was largely illiterate. As a result, descendants became Prunner and Pruner, although Brunner was the original name. Other last names connecting to this tree as a result of spelling changes include, Bronner, Braune, and Brunet.

Three Peter Brunners

  • There were three Peter Brunners in Eastern Upper Canada in earliest period of settlement of refugees from the American Revolutionary War:
  • One researcher indicated that there were two Peter Brunners who died in Stormont -- one in 1793, the other in 1797. However, no source was cited, so it is not certain if this referred to a single Peter Brunner and only the records appeared to be contradictory, or if there were two individuals. [29]
  • In any case, any other Peter Brunner (aside from Peter Brunner U.E.) who may have died in the 1790s was not one of the three Peter Brunners (father, son, and grandson) listed above.

De-Conflating the Children of Peter Prunner UE and Peter Brunner II

  • There is some confusion about who were the children of the first, i.e. Peter Prunner UE. Part of this confusion arises due to the short- and long-term effects of questionable land claims made by members of that family.
  • A current, regularly-quoted, but secondary source -- The Loyalists In Ontario by William D. Reid -- on page 256 indicates nine children for Peter Prunner UE. A close examination of copies of the original relevant land claims has led us to conclude that all but one of these individuals were, in fact, not children but grandchildren of Peter Prunner UE. (References below.) [30]
  • From Reid, pg. 256: [30]
  • "Peter Prunner Sr.
    • Elizabeth, m. John Boice of Matilda. OC 17 March 1807
    • William of Osnabruck. OC 11 June 1840.
    • Julia Ann. OC 28 Oct 1833. Williamsburgh.
    • Polly. OC 28 Oct 1833. Williamsburgh.
    • Adam of Williamsburgh. OC 2 Feb 1825.
    • Nancy. OC 2 Feb 1825.
    • Catharine. OC 2 Feb 1825.
    • Elizabeth., m. David Fratts of Williamsburgh. OC 17 Feb 1825.
    • John of Williamsburgh. OC 2 March 1825."

  • The first clue that something is unusual is in the big gap between the dates of land grant petition to Elizabeth (Brunner) Boyce (grant date: 1807) and those to the other children (grant dates: 1824-1840). [30]
  • A second oddity is that Peter Prunner UE is listed as the father of two Elizabeths, both of whom lived to adulthood and petitioned for land. Not very plausible. [30]
  • In fact, the first listed Elizabeth Brunner is the only one on this list who really was the daughter of Peter Prunner UE, and she was brother to Peter Brunner II, who was not listed in Reid at all. [30]
  • Is it believed that Reid conflated the family of Peter Prunner UE (abt.1735-abt.1795) with that of his son, Peter Brunner II (abt.1763-1848), and since this source is widely quoted, the errors have propagated.[30]
  • So what caused the initial confusion? After the petition of Elizabeth (Brunner) Boyce (abt.1767-bef.1851) in 1807 until 1840, all of these individuals petitioned for land. But only the sons and daughters of an original United Empire Loyalist (i.e. a person who actually served the British in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783)) were entitled to receive a land grant, so how did the grandchildren of a Loyalist qualify for land grants as sons and daughters of UELs? (See original note included with the file on the petition of Peter Prunner III, transcribed below in the Research Notes.) [1]
  • In fact, they did not legally qualify. Each person on this list petitioned for the land, indicating that their father, "Peter Prunner," was a United Empire Loyalist. However, because there were three "Peter Prunners:" father, son, and grandson, this error (or fraud?) was not challenged by the land grant administrators until 1832, during the review of the land claims of James and Margaret. [20] [27]
  • By 1833, during review of the petitions of Polly Prunner (1812-bef.1912) and Julie Ann Prunner (1798-1851), the administrators were sufficiently suspicious to begin to ask for proof of the age of the petitioners' father. In both cases the affidavit was provided certifying that their father was about 68 years old, making him only 16 years old at the end of the war, and confirming their suspicions that he was not an original United Empire Loyalist. [22] [26]
  • Reid, believing these spurious claims to be legitimate, conflated the family of Peter Brunner U.E. with that of his son, Peter Brunner II.
  • Reid would have been further misled by the fact that (according to a note from the Inspector General's Office attached to the petition of James Prunner, transcribed below in the Research Notes), Peter Brunner II was briefly listed as an original Loyalist and then subsequently suspended from the list. [20]
  • (Note that this examination of original land petitions confirmed conclusions reached by other researchers that the children of Peter Brunner II also included James, Margaret, and Peter III.)

True Structure of the Brunner/Prunner Family

  • We can be confident, therefore, that the structure of the Brunner/Prunner family was as follows:

Note Attached to the 1834 Petition of Peter Prunner III

"Peter Prunner
Petitioner's Father, appearing, by his own affidavit to have been but 68 years of age in Aug't 1835, was consequently only 16 years old in 1783 and could not it is presumed have been the head of a family or have served during the Revolutionary War, to entitle him to the privilege of an U.E. Loyalist.
W. Macaulay
I.G.O.
28 Dec 1841"

Note Attached to the 1832 Petition of James Prunner

"It appears by the affidavit of Petitioner's Father (attached to the Petition of Peter Prunner reported or firm [?] this office, 28 Dec. last) who calls himself Peter Prunner, Senr. that he was but 68 years of age in Aug't 1835 and could therefore have been only 16 years old in 1783.
It is therefore evident that Petitioner's Father is the Peter Prunner, Jun'r. who was placed on the U.E. List, but suspended therefrom as being the Son of Peter P. Sen'r.
Petitioner must be the Grandson of the U.E. Loyalist and not entitled to priviledges.
W. Macaulay
Insp'r. Genl's Office
Kingston, 7 January 1842"
