Biography

Sabino A. �Tony� Bruno, age 80, passed away peacefully Friday, March 07, 2008 at his home in Brainerd. Memorial Services will be 12:00 noon Tuesday, March 11, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter. Interment with Military Honors provided by the Brainerd VFW Post #1647 will be at the Minnesota State Veteran�s Cemetery near Camp Ripley. Friends may visit with the family Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter and for one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Sabino Anthony Bruno was born October 3, 1927, in Bari, Italy, the son of Pete and Louise (Manente) Bruno. At age 3 his family immigrated to the United States where he grew up and attended school in New York State. On April 5, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country for over 26 years and in 3 different wars. After retiring from the Navy he went to work for the Long Island Public School system until his retirement. Tony moved to Arizona for several years, then to Zimmerman, MN, and in 1987 he settled in Brainerd. Baseball was one of his passions in life saying he had at one time played sandlot ball with Lou Gehrig. While in Brainerd he lived his passion coaching baseball from Little League on up to High School. In 1996 he helped coach the Brainerd High School team to the State Championship. Deer hunting was also one of his hobbies, last fall he bagged a buck at the Camp Ripley hunt for Disabled Veterans. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Yankees and the New York Giants. Tony was a member of the local VFW and American Legion Posts.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Tony will be sadly missed by his children, Tony Bruno of Laughlin, NV, Craig Bruno of Singapore, Gary (Juanita) Bruno of San Diego, CA, and Randy (Kelly) Bruno of Fayetteville, GA; grandchildren, Danica, Nathan, Christianna, and Joanna; brothers, Nicky and Steve; sisters, Rose, Susan, Margie, and Louise Ann; his special friend, Dorothy Ernst and her family, the Dennis Wickham family; and also his many military comrades.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to your favorite charity.[1]
