Biography

David Bruton aka Brewton was born in 1740 and died in February, 1816, in Spartanburg county, South Carolina. David is buried in the Old Bethel Baptist Cemetery, in Woodruff, Spartanburg county, S.C. [1]

David is found on records as Bruton and Brewton, both pronounced the same way. His Find A Grave memorial is under the spelling of Bruton, however his sons Jonas and Philip are found under the spelling Brewton. [2] [3] Although his Will is under the surname Bruton, four witnesses sign their name Brewton.

David is found on the First Census United States, taken in 1790, living in Spartanburg county, South Carolina. [4] On the 1800 and 1810 census, he is listed as "David Brewton" [5] [6]

Marriage

David Bruton married Susannah Simpson on 7 Feb 1780 in Caswell, North Carolina.[7]

Since all of his sons were born prior to 1780 it is likely that he was married previously and that she died prior to 1780.

A transcription of his will has been placed on the FindAGrave memorial:

WILL of DAVID BRUTON - Vol 1, Sec. A, page 71-Spartanburg Co., SC I, DAVID BRUTON Sr., of Spartanburg Dist. being infirm in body but of sound mind and memory, etc. First, I will to my wife SUSANNAH BRUTON to have and enjoy that part of the plantation whereon I now live containing 27 acres, with all crops, household furniture, tools, stock, cattle, horses, hogs during her natural life. I give to my eldest son GEORGE BRUTON one feather bed which was his mother's in her lifetime. I will that my negro man ISAAC with 50 acres of land that the title was made to me by DANIEL BRAGG, with my riding horse, saddle and bridle to be sold, and money arising to pay my just debts, and my wife to have ten dollars, with my son in law JOHN WILLIAMS to have one shilling if he should apply for any part of my estate; he has received what I consider to be his part. The remainder to be divided between my six sons viz: GEORGE BRUTON, JONAS BRUTON, ENOCH BRUTON, DAVID BRUTON, ISAAC BRUTON, PHILIP BRUTON. I appoint my sons JONAS and PHILIP BRUTON and WILLIAM TIPPINS executors. Dated 17 Mar 1815. Wit: GEO. BREWTON, JOHN BREWTON, NANCY BREWTON, JOEL BREWTON. Signed DAVID BRUTON.

Based upon the "son" Tippens named, he may have had a 1st marriage to a woman who married a Tippens.

Elsewhere the profiles suggest that Susannah (Unknown) Simpson was actually his 2nd wife. They may have had a daughter together, Celia (Bruton?) Cockran or Cockram, who married Jacob Cockram (the great granddaughter Susannah E B Cockran was their child), from reading the transcription of the will of Susannah.
