Biography

Thomas Bryan was son of Sir Thomas Bryan and his wife, Isabel.[1][2] He was born abut 1457 probably at Cheddington in Buckinghamshire.

He was knighted in 1497 on the occasion of the King, Henry VII, entering London after the Battle of Blackheath. [3]

He married Margaret Bourchier, daughter of Sir Humphrey Bourchier and his wife, Elizabeth Tilney at some time before 1495. [2] Margaret, soon after the birth of the Princess Mary in 1516, was made Lady Mistress to the baby. [4]

Thomas died late in 1516 or early in 1517, the will that he had written on 1 October 1508 being proved on 30 January 1517. [4][5][6]

Research notes

  • Thomas DOB was given as 1 June 1457. So many of the profiles of the family have the same 1st June date that it has become a byword for unbelievable information. 1st June has been removed from this profile, about 1457 being used instead.
  • The person noted as the questionable John Bryant once given here as son has been identified and sourced.

This Thomas Bryan-168 had a 2nd son named Thomas Bryan, b. circa 1487, d. before 1508. Not found yet on wikitree. Richardson in Royal Ancestry I, p.486 says mother Margaret Bourchier[-5] had 2 Bryan sons, Thomas and Francis. Sir Thomas Bryan, mentions Thomas his son already dead (died before 1508) and was buried in Ashridge chapel. Also in History of Parliament, "Francis Bryan may have been the second son of this marriage: he had a brother Thomas who died before 1508 and was buried in Ashridge chapel." bio of Sir Francis Bryan. https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1509-1558/member/bryan-sir-francis-1492-1550

I accidentally changed the status of the pending merge to "unmerged match". Sorry! I have reinstated it.

Bryan-168 and Bryan-1563 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same birth date and the same wife (there are duplicate profiles for the wife, with a merge pending).

Bryan-1563 and Bryan-168 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles have been identified as representing the same person. See reasoning at Space:Bryan family possible fabrication Best use dates and places as Bryan-168.

Bryan-1563 and Bryan-170 do not represent the same person because: Rejecting this merge because there is also Bryan-168, into which these profiles should be merged.

Sir Thomas Bryan the son was a Knight Bachelor. Sir Thomas Bryan the father was Knight of the Bath and Justice of Common Pleas.

Thomas the son was knighted, Knights Bachelors, June 17, 1497. At the Bridge Foot, on the King Henry VII entering London after the battle of Blackheath. Knights of England, page 30. https://archive.org/details/knightsofengland02shaw_0/page/n37

This source makes it clear that Sir Thomas Bryan, KB was the Chief Justice of Common Pleas and Knight of the Bath (not Knight Bachelor) . see page 136 in this book https://archive.org/details/ShawWATheKnightsOfEnglandVol11906/page/n229
