Biography

Thomas Hasilrig Bryan went by the nickname "Jeff" for reasons still unknown to his ancestors. Multiple versions and spellings of his middle name have been found in census, legal, and written family records. (Spellings include: Haslerig, Hazelrig, Hazelrigg, Haselrig, etc.) Thomas Hasilrig Bryan [1] will be the name used for this profile.

When Thomas Hasilrig "Jeff" Bryan was born on June 21, 1849, in Walker County, Georgia, (Lafayette area, near Chattanooga and Chickamauga Creek) his father, James, was 32 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 28. He married Mahulda Young and they had at least three children together. He then remarried around 1913. He died on April 11, 1917, at the age of 67.

"Thomas H. Bryan was my granddad, James Witt Bryan’s dad. For some reason he was called Jeff. It seems that he and his brother decided to go to Texas after the Civil War, but either going or coming Thomas got sick and was taken in by Mahulda Young’s family. He stayed with them awhile, got involved with Mahulda, she became pregnant with granddad and they married. Thomas and Hulda, (her mother was also Mahulda,) lived in that house all their married lives."
