Biography

Jean was born in 1938. She was the daughter of Marvin Bryan and Margaret Doss. She passed away in 2001.

Mrs Jean Ann Bryan Herzog, 63, died Aug. 15, 2001, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital after an 18-month battle with cancer.

"Her loving family was at her side," a family member wrote.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church.

Mrs. Herzog was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Dec. 13, 1938. In 1947, her family moved to Tracy, Calif. Mrs. Herzog worked as a bookkeeper after graduating from Tracy High School in 1956. In 1959, she met Martin Herzog, and they were married in 1962, spending their honeymoon a year later driving up the Alaska Highway and caribou hunting on the Denali Highway.

Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Denise, they returned to Alaska in 1965, settling in Anchorage. Mrs. Herzog spent summers picking berries, fishing, hunting, camping and growing vegetables. In 1976, the family started placer mining on Cache Creek, south of Mount McKinley. After seeing her daughter off to college in Fairbanks, she went to work as a bookkeeper in the accounting office of Carrs Quality Centers.

In 1990, she and her husband began wintering in Carson City, Nev. After seven years, they returned full time to Alaska, settling in Fairbanks.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Margaret Bryan; and brother, Merrill Williamson.

She is survived by her husband, Martin; daughter, Denise; son-in-law, John Cook; and grandson, Jack, all of Fairbanks; sister, Bessie Line, sister-in-law, Margaret Ulrich, brother- and sister-in-law, Jerry and Melvie Herzog, brother-in-law, Robert Herzog, all of California; sister-in-law, Phyllis Williamson of Iowa; sister-in-law, Rose McCaskey of Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends in Fairbanks, Anchorage, California, Nevada and Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Herzog's memory to the Greater Fairbanks Community Hospital Foundation, c/o The Fairbanks Cancer Treatment Center, P.O. Box 71396, Fairbanks 99707.
