Biography

Mary was born in 1860 in Herkimer, New York. She was the daughter of Henry Bryant and Mariah Garner. As a young child her family moved to Amboy, NY and she was raised there. She stayed single until she married Charles J. Patchen, a widow, in 1902 in Amboy, and she was a step-mother to his two children. Prior to her marriage she was working at a waitress in a local hotel. She was widowed in 1918. She passed away in 1942 in New York.

Research Notes

Mary's obituary and her step-daughter's family bible give birth date as 18 Jan 1860, but she is not shown in 1860 census with her parents, who although living on same property are not shown as married at that time. She may have been born a year later?

• Obituary: Daily Sentinel, Rome, NY, Monday Eve, Dec 21, 1942. (Copied from West Amboy, Dec. 21 - Mrs. Mary A. Patchen, 82, died at 11 p.m. Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Bryant, after a long illness. She was born in Herkimer, Jan. 18, 1860, a daughter of the late Henry and Marie Garner Bryant. In Amboy Center on July 6, 1902 she was married to Charles J. Patchen, the Rev. L. L. Davey performing the ceremony. Mr. Patchen died 24 years ago. Surviving besides the daughter at whose home she died, are a son Frank Patchen, Syracuse; a brother Frank Bryant, Williamstown and nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.'
