Biography

Charity Louisa Bryant was born on December 20, 1805 in Cummington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, daughter of Peter Bryant (1767–1820) and Sarah Snell (1768–1847).[1]

The Olds household in 1850 included Justin and his wife, Louisa, and their children, Sarah, Julia, Bryant, John Hixon, and Lucy. They were living in Indiantownship in Bureau County, Illinois. Justin was working as a clerk with real estate valued at $1500.[2]

Research Notes

The death date on Charity's tombstone (13 Dec 1868, using my own photograph) is incorrect. The birth records of Cummington, Massachusetts, show she was born 20 Dec 1805. Her tombstone gives her age at death as 61 yrs 11 mos 23 dys, giving her a calculated death date of 13 Dec 1867. I have examined the microfilmed Bureau County Republican (Princeton, Illinois) for 1867 and 1868 and found no death notice for her. (There is a small clipping missing from the issue of 24 Dec 1868.) A microfilmed issue of the New York Evening Post for 10 Feb 1868 contains the following: "OLDS -- At Princeton, Illinois, on the 12th [or 13th? (not clear)], December, Mrs. Charity Louisa Olds, wife of Justin H. Olds" A typed abstract of the same clipping gives the same information. The abstracts are recorded in daily, dated segments, and unlikely to be in the wrong year. Furthermore, an obituary of Justin H. Olds says his wife died 13 Dec 1867. Perhaps some family recording may also be found. I have entered her death date as 13 Dec 1867. Olds-150 21:08, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
