  • Source: S3225 Media: Book Hansborough Settlement Publication: Copy of pages 20-25 were sent to David Stearns by Beverly A Evans. No source for the pages was given but appears to be from some type of History of Highland County? 5. THE HANSBOROUGH SETTLEMENT A settlement of entirely different origin was located east of Samantha, west of what is now known as Kincaid Road, and north of State Route 138 (Greenfield Pike), including several hundred acres of land. It was a thriving center of people living in log cabins, some two story log houses, and the home of Philip Hansborough part of log construction. There was a school, a church, and a family cemetery on the grounds. Philip F. Hansborough, founder of this settlement, was born in Virginia in 1804, son of William Hansborough, a white slaveholder in Culpeper County, Virginia, and his Negro wife, Elizabeth (Betty Packer) Hansborough. William and Elizabeth had four children: Philip, Mary Garnet (sometimes known as Mary Skipworth), Catherine Bryant, and Eliza Campbell. 34 Although many free Negroes were mulatto children of white slaveholders such a family would not be without social and legal difficulities. Southern states passed laws against giving freedom to those classified as slaves, and the Black Laws of the South placed heavy restrictions on free Negroes who were considered to be a threat to the institution of slavery. As early as 1825 William Hansborough must have been making preparations to settle his children in free territory when he purchased 289 acres of land in Highland County as follows: 132 acres from James and Polly Stafford, and 157 acres from Joshua Woodrow, Jr. and his wife Nancy. 37. Eleven years later, 1836, Philip purchased 291 ½ acres in three parcels from David and Hannah Buntain, James Buntain, and John H. and Margaret Walker. 38. About 1840 Philip brought his wife, Amy Payton, and p.22 son, William H., to Highland County, and other relatives and friends were added to the settlement then or later.* At the death of William Hansborough in Virginia, sometime before July 15, 1845, his property was divided among his four children who all settled in Highland County. Philip went back to Virginia for the sale of his father's personal property and brought ten or twelve slaves and set them free, bringing four of them to his settlement in Ohio and caring for them until they died.39. A portion of the William Hansborough will is recorded in the Highland County Recorder's Office in connection with an adjustment of land ownership in Highland County between "Richard H. Field, Exr. of Wm Hansborough Dec'd" and Philip and his three sisters, dated July 15, 1845. The will states that Philip F. Hansborough is "emancipated by this will, in Ohio or any other state he may choose." The will further provided that if Philip did not have a child or children certain amounts due him would be divided among his sisters, and similar provisions were made concerning the sisters. Catherine (Mrs. Monroe Bryant) and Mary Garnet (Mary Skipworth) both purchased property in Fairfield Township, Hightop area. The mother, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hansborough, was in the home of her daughter, Catherine Bryant, at the time of the 1850 U.S. Census, and she died in 1853, as is recorded on her gravestone in the Hansborough settlement cemetery where she is buried. William Barber, of the Hansborough Settlement, was the first known Highland County Negro to enlist in the Union Army in the Civil War, serving in the 55th Massachusetts Infantry. *The date of the arrival of the Hansborough family is determined by information in the 1850 U.S. Census, Highland County, Liberty Township, with ages of children born in Virginia compared with ages of children born in Ohio. p. 24 Philip Hansborough died in September, 1887. The newspaper memoir states "He was noted among his neighbors and in the community generally, for his upright life and for his many acts of kindness and charity. He was a prominent Republican, and until the last few years, when he was enfeebled by old age, held a prominent place in the councils of the party. He was buried in the family cemetery. A later Philip Hansborough was buried in the Hightop cemetery which testifies to the close relationship of the people of Hightop and the Hansborough Settlement. Elizabeth Evans, of Hightop, taught school in Hansborough. Grant Hurd, now of Hillsboro, who grew up in the Hansborough Settlement, conducted a tour of the grounds and related experiences of the past. The log section of the Philip Hansborough house had been torn down and replaced with more modern construction. The old barn had been changed some. The gravestones of the cemetery that had been raised in recent years had again fallen and were covered with growth. One stone loose enough to be lifted and leaned against a tree proved to be that of the mother, Betsy Hansborough. The school and church were gone. Grant remembered a large tree had fallen and another still growing larger. He pointed out the location where the log cabins and houses had been but are no longer there. Harvey Ames of Hillsboro, grew up in the Hansborough Settlement and later helped dismantle the log cabins and houses. Cecil William Campbell, of Columbus, lived in the Hansborough Settlement. Arnita Burr, of Hillsboro, tells of spending her summer vacations with relatives in Hansborough.
