Biography

Charles Bryce is an Anzac who served in World War One.

He joined up with his cousin Sidney Watt in 1914, and served with the 3rd and 55th Battalions. He was wounded in action at Gallipoli^[2] but recovered and later served in France. He was discharged in 1918 suffering from neurasthenia (probably shell shock). He was described as 5'7" tall, with brown hair and eyes and a dark complexion.^[3] Some of his letters home were published in the local newspaper (see links below).

Charles married Mabel Ganderton at Tomerong, NSW, on the 16th of November, 1919.^[4] They had four children together, and Charles also had a daughter with his first cousin Curtis Bryce during the marriage. Charles and Mabel divorced in 1934.^[5][6]

He remarried to Curtis Bryce at Murwillumbah in 1938.^[7] They had another son together.

He died at Murwillumbah in 1969.^[8]

   Private Charles Edward Bryce, who has been wounded while fighting at the Dardanelles, is a son of Mr. Wm. Bryce, builder and contractor, of Thirroul, and formerly of Nowra. He had only recently gone to the front after a bout of illness. He is 24 years of age, and was a resident of Tomerong until shortly before his enlistment. Private Bryce volunteered with Sid Watt, a relative, immediately after the outbreak of war, and both were rejected ; but not being satisfied they, made a second attempt, and were successful.

   A quiet wedding took place at Tomerong on the 16th November, the contracting parties being Miss Mabel Ganderton, daughter of Mr. T Ganderten of Tomerong, and Mr. Charles Bryce of Tomerong, son of Mr. Wm. Bryce of Thirroul. Rev. Jamieson-Williams officiated. After the wedding Mr. and Mrs. Bryce left for the Clarence River where they intend to reside. Mr. Bryce is a returned soldier with many years' service to his credit. The best wishes of the community go with the happy couple to their new home.
