Biography

Alice Bryen, immigrated with her father, Lewis Bryen from England to Colonial Maryland, where he wrote his Will on January 31, 1676 and it was probated on February 5, 1676, in Anne Arundel county, Maryland. [1] Alice was the second wife of Nicholas Corbin and her husband was named the administrator of her father's Will, along with Jonas Bowen, husband of Rebecca (Bryen) Bowen, Alice's sister. For the transcript of the Will, see her father's profile.

Alice and Nicholas were the parents of two children: [2]

  • Nicholas Corbin, II, born circa 1676, died before 1750
  • Edward Corbin, born 1685, in Baltimore, Maryland, died June 14, 1770, whose son, Nicholas Corbin is named in the Will of his step-father, John Barrett's Will, written June 21, 1717.

Nicholas Corbin wrote his Will in 1695. A copy of theoriginal may be viewed here: http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~keuttah/genealogy/ncw.htm#top

Nicholas Corbin, Sr. was buried in Saint Paul's Parish Cemetery, in Baltimore County, on December 31, 1696. [3] Alice married, secondly John Barrett and became the mother of two children:

  • John Barret, born circa 1705
  • Mary Sinclair Barrett, born 1707, in Baltimore, Maryland, died 1746, in Maryland, married John Royston, who is named in the Will of John Barrett

John Barrett wrote his Will on June 21, 1717 and it was probated on March 24, 1718, in Baltimore, Maryland. Alice (Bryen) Corbin-Barrett was living at that time, and was made executrix of her second husband's Will.

Researchers Notes

BARRETT, JOHN, d. by 24 March 1717/8 having m. Alice, extx. of Nicholas Corbin; his will, 21 June 1717 - 24 March 1717/8 named "grandson" Nicholas Corbin, eld. s. of Edward Corbin, also John Royston, James Wells, and John Keith, s. of Alex., wife Alice to be extx.; she was alive in Nov. 1718 when Zacheus Richards, age 2, was bound to serve her. (Source: Robert W. Barnes. 1989. Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759. Genealogical Publ. Co., Baltimore, MD (Broderbund CD-195).)

The first reference to James Wells after his name appears in 1716 with that of his wife, Ann, in the St. Paul’s Register, happens to be without association with his wife’s name, therefore, it cannot be claimed definitely that the beneficiary of this Will was our James Wells, who by that time is thought to have had four children, Thomas, Patience, one (unnamed to us) daughter, and James (3) in 1716. We refer to the Will of John Barrett of Baltimore County, signed March 24th, 1717, with his mark, and witnessed by Alexander Keith, Moses Edwards, and Katharine Lindall. A portion reads:

  • I Will unto James Wells that is now my Servant to the value of one thousand pounds of Tobacco as my executrix shall think fit to pay it." [4]

Byren-1 and Bryen-1 appear to represent the same person because: Correct spelling is Bryen
