James was born in 1837 in Canada. His parents, James Bryson and Margaret Scot had emigrated from Scotland in 1836. They later settled in Alamakee County, Iowa. [1]
Civil War
James enlisted with the Iowa 27th Infantry in 1862. He entered as 4th Sergeant and was promoted to full Sergeant in 1864.[2][3][4][5][6]
