Half-sister to Marie d'Agoult, the famous countess and lover of Franz Liszt. Like her sister, Augusta lived passionately. In 1806 she fell in love with a French officer who was equerry to Hortense Bonaparte. Her family disapproved, and Augusta transferred her affections to the poet Klemens Brentano, a man as unsuitable for her as the first.
Augusta invited Brentano on a carriage-ride, but when he entered her carriage, he found Augusta in a wedding dress with two witnesses alongside her. They raced to the altar, and spent the next 4 years in a stormy relationship before divorcing. Augusta then became a fanatical supporter of Napoleon and even tried to follow him into exile. Finally, she settled down and married a man to her family's liking.
