William, son of James Alexander Buchanan & Jessie Dick, was baptised on 16 January 1876 at West St Giles' Church, in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[1]

The family immigrated to Canada likely in 1880, as gleaned from various census records.

William is listed in the 1881 Canadian census, age 5. He is residing in Orillia (Town), Simcoe North, Ontario, Canada. At home are his parents, James (of Ireland) and Jessie (Scotland), and his siblings Jane G, Martha, both born in Scotland, and James A, born in Ontario. [2]

The family immigrated to NY state likely around 1884, as gleaned from various census records.

In the 1892 NY state census William (age 17) was residing in Rochester in the 8th Ward. Little information is provided in this record, but it does indicate that he was not yet a naturalized citizen. [3]

William was 23 at the time of the 1900 US Federal Census. In this record his birthdate is listed as Dec 1876, Scotland. At the time of the census, he was living at 14 Doran Park in Rochester's 19th Ward. His immigration year is listed as 1880. He is residing in the home of his parents, James and Jessie, both of Scotland. He was employed as a moulder. Also at home are his siblings James S (23), Martha (22), and James A (20). [4]

William married Anna E. Bedwin on 28 June 1900 in Rochester, New York, United States.[5]

They will have three children,

  • Jessie F, b. abt 1901 (per various census, no birth record found)
  • Raymond F, b. 1903 in Rochester, NY [6]
  • James W, b. abt 1907 (per various census, no birth record found)

In the 1905 Census, William and Anna are now residing together with their children Jessie (3), and Raymond (2), Anna's sister Clara Bedwin was also residing in the home. [7]

At the time of the 1910 Census, William and Anna rent their home at 1001 Exchange St. His immigration year is listed as 1883 in this record. He is listed as a naturalized citizen. He continues to work as moulder in the iron works industry. Also at home at their children, Jessie F (8), Raymond F (7), and James W (3). [8]

William and his wife and children are listed in the 1915 US State Census (no new information provided in this record). [9]

At the time of the 1920 Census, the family is now residing at 2 Stanley St. Interestingly, this record lists his native tongue as Scots. He continues to work as a moulder. The house has now gotten a bit crowded, as in addition to he and his wife and three children, his father James, and sister Jean and Martha, are now also residing in the home. [10]

In 1926, William and Anna are mentioned in the marriage record of their son Raymond.[11]

William died 24 Jan 1927 In Rochester NY. At the time of his death he was residing at 393 Flint St with his wife. He was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in the family plot, Section:South 11 Lot:149 Grave:3W-N. [12][13]

Research Notes

This profile is a work in progress. I welcome help with this profile!

Although baptism record indicates 1876, various census data suggests he was born in December of the preceding year (Dec 1875). However, FindAGrave indicates birth date of 5 Dec 1874.

NEED children's birth records

NEED primary sources for immigration/naturalization, although unlikely to find. Based on census information, likely the family immigrated from Scotland to Canada around 1880, and then from Canada to NY around 1884. Canada did not start recording census or immigration information until 1881, and did not record immigration over Canadian/US Borders until 1895.
