James was born on July 26, 1909 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Claude Reginald and Ada Mae Buchanan.[3,4,5,6] His father was a lumber merchant.[4] By 1920 the family, with James now having two sisters, had moved to Long Beach, California.[5]
In January, 1930, James married Mildred Pierson in Yuma, Arizona.[8] The engagement was announced by Mildred's parents in the January 3 issue of the Riverside Daily Press with a note that a summer wedding was planned, but the marriage took place a week later! Three months later James was living with other soldiers near Ferris, California at the March Air Force Base.[9] The census shows him as having married that year. However local papers in Riverside in 1930 and 1931 continue to refer to Mildred as "Miss Mildred Pierson."
On July 18, 1936 James married Gladys Marion Crowell.[10] When James registered for the draft in 1940, he reported that he was married, living in Oakland, California, and working for Sears Roebuck.[6] By 1962 he had relocated to Los Angeles.[11]
James passed away in 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada.[3]
