Biography

John was born 1821.

John emigrated with his brother Edward from London to New Zealand in the ship Gananoque, arriving in Auckland 18th October 1861 with John Buchanan, his wife Margaret (Smellie) Buchanan and their children Jane and Andrew Buchanan . Also travelling with them was Agnes Rankin Smellie who later married their brother George Buchanan. ^{[1] [2]}

Another of our old identities passed away this morning, in the person of Mr John Buchanan of the firm of J. and G. Buchanan, stonemasons, Wellesle Street. Mr Buchanan had been ailing since last December, and died at 6.30 a.m. to-day, at the residence of his brother in Franklin Road. He was 76 years of age, and a native of Glasgow.

Arriving in New Zealand in 1861, he settled in Auckland a year later, and commenced business as a monumental stonemason in Wellesley Street where he has worked for 36 years. Mr Buchanan was well known and highly esteemed in the building trade, and always bore a high reputation for strictest integrity in business. The funeral will leave his brother's residence for Waikometi on Sunday, at 1.30 p.m.
