Biography

Hugh Buchanan was born in Ireland (as per his son William's census records), most likely in Northern Ireland, possibly Cos Donegal or Tyrone.

He married Martha Matson.

Hugh and Martha had at least one son (confirmed)

• William, born abt 1810, in Co Donegal, Ireland. William immigrated to Scotland with his wife and children sometime btwn 1848 - 1861.

According to an excerpt from a Burke's Peerage, they may have had 5 sons, also to possibly include

• James, born abt 1820 in Ramelton, Co Donegal, Ireland. James immigrated to America in 1840. ^[1] This information needs confirmation. It should be noted that this excerpt also includes many other details which are definitely inaccurate, however many of the details regarding James' life in America are confirmed with reliable sources.

It is unknown if Hugh died in Ireland or if immigrated out of the country, as was very common at the time.

He is mentioned in William's death record, along with Martha ^[2]

The only primary/reliable source/info I have for Hugh is his son William's death record, which clearly lists Hugh and Martha as his parents, as well as William's census records, which all consistently report his parents' birthplace as Ireland, as well as William's own birthplace as specifically Co Donegal.

LIKELY DISPROVEN: There is significant confusion regarding Hugh's parentage across various ancestry sites, often linking him with parents Andrew Buchanan and Janet Niven, who had a son Hugh in 1771 in Glasgow, however, this Hugh Buchanan appears to have died in infancy. The above referenced Burke's peerage makes this mistake, and is likely responsible for much of the confusion.
