David Bucher was born in Frederick County, Virginia and for about the first decade of married life, lived and worked in Stephens City, Virginia as a carpenter. About 1858 he and his family moved to Staunton, Virginia, and during the Civil War he served as a captain in the Fifth Augusta County Infantry, in Confederate Army. After the war he was a building contractor in Staunton and worked on many of the major buildings in the city including the new post office. About 1880 he purchased a mill on Middle River in Augusta County and ran it for about 20 years.
