Biography

Martin Buchner was born ca 1620 and most likely in Bölsberg, parish of Marienberg in the district of Beilstein, County of Nassau-Diez (now Bad Marienberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Since the oldest surviving churchbook of Marienberg only starts in 1645, there is now way of giving an exact date of birth. His father was Laurentius "Lentz" Buchner of Bölsberg.

In 1652 he was accused to be the father of the illegitimate child of a serving maid. The entry reads:

Translation: "On September 19th or 20th Barbgen, the daughter of Weigand Kayser of Kakenberg, and now serving maid with Hans Girhardt of Hardt, got into childbirth and gave birth to a little son, who was baptized on the 23th. The Baptism was asked for, and Godparents got invited by Paulus Müller in representation of Merten Buchner of Bölsberg, who was named by her as the father of the child. Godparents were: Johann Buchner of Unnau; Tönges Zehrung of Ritzhausen; Elß, the wife of Tönges Schütz of Bölsberg; and Lena, the wife of Hans Girhardt of Hardt.

More research is needed to find out what became of this child.

1st Marriage: He married 4 Jun 1655 in Marienberg Maria Kölsch of Unnau. The entry reads:

[1655] Altero die Pentecost. Merten, Lentz Bucheners von Boltzberg nachgelassner ehlicher Sohn, und Maria, Christ Cölsch ehliche Tochter zu Unnau. [2]
Translation: "On the second day of Pentecost 1655 (= June 4th) got married Merten, legitimate son of the late Lentz Buchner of Bölsberg; and Maria, legitimate daughter of Christ Kölsch of Unnau."

The family initially might have lived in Bölsberg, but later moved to Unnau. The following children are known:

  1. Anna "Enche" Buchner; born ca 1656 in Bölsberg;
  2. Johannes Buchner; born ca 1658 in Unnau;
  3. Roderich "Rorich" Buchner; born 1661 in Unnau;
  4. Johann Sebastian "Bäst" Buchner; born 1663 in Unnau;
  5. Matthias "Theiß" Buchner; born 1666 in Unnau;
  6. Hans Gerhard Buchner; born 1667 in Unnau;
  7. Catharina Buchner; born 1669 in Unnau;
  8. Eva Buchner; born 1671 in Unnau; died young 1671 in Unnau.
  9. Martin "Merten" Buchner; born 1673 in Unnau;

2nd Marriage: After the death of his wife in 1674 he married the widow Freiche Zimmermann, née ??? of Neustadt. The entry reads:

[1680] Dom. Rogate: Martin Buchner zu Unnaw, Wittman; undt Freiche, Fritz Zimmermans hinderlasne Witwe von Newstatt. [3]
Translation: "On Sunday Rogate 1680 (= May 16th) got married the widower Merten Buchner of Unnau; and Freiche, the widow of Fritz Zimmermann of Neustadt."

Death: He passed away 1694 in Unnau. The short entry says: "On February 22nd 1694 was buried Merten Buchner of Unnau." [4]

Research Notes

Some online trees and also the profile here gave the date of birth as 27 Jul 1620. But there is no source for that and since the older churchbooks of the parish did not survive the 30 Years War, we might never know an exact date.
