Biography

Elizabeth Gorsuch Buck was the daughter of Christopher Buck & Kezia Gorsuch. She was born on the family farm in the White Marsh area of Baltimore County 10 MAR 1800. She was married to Joseph Hiss and was the mother of four children. A notice of her death appeared in the Baltimore Sun on 16 MAR 1876:

HISS - On the morning of March 13, 1876, Elizabeth G. aged 76 years, relict of the late Joseph Hiss. The relatives and friends of the family are respectively invited to attend her funeral from her late residence at 42 N. Poppleton St. on this Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. [1]

1832 Joshua Buck grants clear title to the 40x100 foot lot with a house located on the corner of Stiles & Exeter left by the will of Christopher Buck to his 3 daughters. Deed mentions a house several times. There is also a similar document signed by Benjamin Buck of Christopher.

1854 Elizabeth G. Hiss, and Charles & Mary Jessop sell to John G. Chapman for $300 sell the southwest corner of Stiles & Exeter. This is land inherited by the will of Christopher Buck and does not appear to have a house built on it.

1854 John Lee Chapman note to Elizabeth G. Hiss for the sum of $2,200 on account of the purchase money agreed to be paid by him for the lot of ground and premises hereinafter described for which sum he has signed note.

1855 John Lee Chapman reissued note to Elizabeth G. Hiss for $1,100. She has the right to demand payment with 30 days notice.

5 DEC 1855: assignment from James Gamble to Elizabeth G. Hiss widow. Very hard to read but I think she bought her house located on the west side of Poppleton St. 125’ south of Lexington for 00. The deed mentions land rents and improvements. I can’t figure out if she’s buying the house or the land.

City Directories after this date give her address as 42 N Poppleton St.
