Mrs. Maria Phillippa Smith, a Port Adelaide pioneer, died at the residence of Mrs. Hayman, Light-street, Exeter, on Sunday afternoon. She would have completed her 94th year tomorrow. She was born in London, and was the daughter or the late Mr. Robert Buck, who landed with Colonel Light at Port Adelaide from the Rapid in 1836. Mrs. Smith followed with her mother in 1839, on the ship Cleveland. She used to declare that the natives lined the river bank, armed and threatening, and had to be bribed with tobacco to allow them to land in the boats. They joined her father at Bucks Flat, near Glanville, where he had built a hut, and there they resided for some years. She married in 1846, and her husband died about 50 years ago [sic]. Mrs. Smith resided for some years in Young-street Exeter, and had very good health until last Thursday. She could get about well with the help of a stick, and her hearing was good, but her eyesight has failed. She leaves three sons, Messrs. S. R. Smith, of Glenelg; H. Smith, of Exeter: and R J Smith, of Sydney: ten grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. [4]
