Lemira Buck was born in 1789 in Vermont, the daughter of Joseph Buck, at one point in time from Arlington, Vermont.[1] Little is known about Joseph Buck, but we do know that he was recorded in Fairfax, Vermont with a family on the 1790 census.[2]
She married Haynes Bailey, son of Daniel Bailey and Sarah Mudgett, in Fairfax, Vermont, on 25 September 1808.[3] The couple had nine known children, born in Fletcher, VT and recorded on the town records, Book 1, page 665:
Haynes (twin), b. 2 Dec. 1809; d. 24 Dec. 1809
Lemira (twin), b. 2 Dec. 1809; d. 18 Dec. 1809
Frederick, b. 28 Apr. 1811; d. 1 Feb. 1849 (St. Louis, MO) (unm.)
Mary (Polly) Samantha, b. 19 Aug. 1812; m. Addison Soule, abt. 1833; d. 24 Oct. 1879 (Geneseo, IL)
Almira Buck, b. 28 Apr. 1814; m. Joseph King, 7 Jan. 1847; d. abt. 1871
Franklin, b. 17 Oct. 1815; d. 30 Nov. 1861
Adelia Sophia, b. 26 Mar. 1817; m. Merrill Story Orton, 28 Feb. 1849; d. Apr. 1880 (Galesburg, IL)
The family was living at Fletcher, VT when the 1810,[4] 1820,[5] 1830[6] and 1840[7] censuses were taken. Lemira lost her husband when Haynes died on 15 Aug. 1842, in Fletcher, VT., at age 67.[8] She and the family remained a few more years in Fletcher, where they were recorded on the 1850 census.[9]
Sometime after 1850, and by 1855, Lemira travelled to Illinois; several of her children - son Lyman B Bailey and daughters Sally Ann Gale and Adelia Orton - had decided to leave Vermont and move there. In 1860, Lemira and Lyman were living together in Sparta, Illinois.[10]
Lemira died 16 December 1863 in Knox County, Illinois and was buried there in Robbins Cemetery, Wataga.[11]
