Biography

Oliver Henry Buck was born on the 19th of June 1841 in Switzerland County, Indiana.[1] He was the second youngest son of Judson and Hannah Buck.[2] He and his family lived in Posey Township in Indiana. By 1860, his family had moved to Waynesville, Illinois. During this time, Oliver had a standard education and hard working farm life that contemporary writing described as ‘invigorating sort of training which eventually makes the hardiest, most common-sense and useful American citizens’.

On the 16th of December 1869, Oliver married Hannah Belle Hammitt in Dewitt County, Illinois.[3] The couple had five children together and remained married their entire lives.[4]

Oliver remained in Waynesville until 1877[5], where he purchased 90 acres of land in Funk’s Grove, Illinois. Though it started simple, Oliver’s perseverance, skill, and judgement created a profitable and locally renown dairy farm. Oliver’s talent at carpentry also vastly improved his estate to include many buildings.

Contemporaries of Oliver wrote he was a man of unimpeachable honesty and integrity. Politically, he was a lifelong Republican with a just yet charitable nature. They also described him as liberal in his religious opinions and a member of Christian Scientists. He was elected as an assessor and successfully served for twenty two years.[6]

Oliver remained in Funk’s Grove for the remainder of his life.[7] He eventually passed away on the 1st of May 1914 in his home after deteriorating health from multiple strokes.[8]He is buried in the Mclean Cemetery.[9]

Oliver Buck was well known and had many friends in both McLean and DeWitt county.
