Biography

Early Life

Nellie (Buck) Hawes was born in Marylebone, London, England.

Ellen Buck, also known as 'Nellie' and 'Helen' was born on May 13th 1901 to Ernest Buck and Elizabeth Katherine Smith. No record of a baptism has been found.^{[1] [2]}

In 1911, Nellie appears alongside her parents and her six living siblings at 70 Salisbury Street, a nine room dwelling. ^[3]

She is next listed on her father's WW1 war pension claim in 1918, confirming her date of birth and listing two addresses her and her family occupied: 24 Huntingdon Terrace (1914-1916) and 5 William Street (1917 to Unknown). ^[2]

First Marriage

Aged 16 or 17, in the April Quarter of 1918 Nellie married Edward Hawes. In the October Quarter of the same year she had her first child. They would go on to have nine children in total between 1918 and 1945. ^[4]

In 1939, Nellie appears on the 1939 Register as Ellen Hawes and appears to be residing at Huntsworth Terrace (NW8), although the address is unclear. ^[5]

Second Marriage

Her husband, Edward, then died in 1949 in Kensington but a year later she married Robert William Sullivan in Marylebone. ^{[6] [7]}

On January 27th 1961 there was a fire in their home at Cherwell House, Church Street, Marylebone. Robert and his step-daughter who were in the house at the time managed to escape unharmed. ^[8]

Death

Robert Sullivan died in Marylebone in 1973 and Nellie went on to die three years later in 1976. ^{[9] [10]}
