Biography

James was born 6 Jul 1827[1] at Tunbridge, Orange County, Vermont the son of Joseph Buckland and Hannah Daggett.

Census records giving the ages of children indicate he married Nancy Aldrich by 1848 which means the marriage could have taken place in Vermont or California (although there is no indication Nancy was in California prior to marriage).[2] The 1900 US Census appears to state he had been married for 45 years but this appears to be a write-over of 55 which would place the marriage in 1845.[3]

Census records also indicate that after the family left Vermont, they first went to California. The 1860 US Census records show Lafayette and Laura as born in California while the 1870 US Census records show Cyrus, Lafeyette and Celestia born in California.

He came to Utah Territory in 1854[1][4] where his elder brother Alandus had already relocated and James first appears in Utah records in the 1856 Statehood Census living in North Kanyon Ward, Cedar County.[5] He is recorded on the muster rolls of the Utah Territorial Militia in 1857 now living in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah.[6] The family continues to be found in Bountiful in 1860 and 1870[7] and by 1880 has moved to Stockton, Tooele County, Utah.[8] Nancy's mother Prudence lived with the family until her death in 1880.

He passed away 2 Dec 1900[1] and is interred at Bountiful Memorial Park, Bountiful, Utah.[9]

Research Notes

Ann Thomas was attached to this profile as a wife but has been removed for lack of any documentation. She may be seen at Find-a-Grave but is undocumented and should not be reattached absent primary sources.

Some very confusing genealogies have Nancy first married to James' elder brother Alondus (Alanda) but there is nothing which supports this.
