Joseph Edward Buckland was born 28 Sep 1890 in Woodsdale, Stevens County, Kansas[1][2] the son of Orson Buckland and Beatrice Worthy. By 1900, the family had moved to Liberal, Seward County, Kansas[3] and by 1910, young Joe was working as a bookkeeper in a dry goods store.[4] An obituary states that the plumbing and heating firm he operated with his father was begun in 1909.[5]
On 1 Feb 1912, Joe married Nina Rhea (seen Rhey in newspapers of the period) at Liberal, Kansas in the new home which the couple would make their own.[6] The couple were married by Rev Carlysle of the M.E. Church of Hugoton, Kansas. The newspapers called Joe "one of the best young men in the city" who had "thousands of friends." First daughter Helen joined the family in early 1914.[7]
By 1920, the young family had moved to Morton County, Kansas where Joe is listed as operating a "tin shop."[8] By 1930, the family was operating the plumbing company in Perryton, Texas[9] and then returned to Liberal, Kansas by 1940.[10]
Joe passed away at his home on Sunday, 18 May 1958 after suffering a heart attack.[5] He is interred at the Liberal Cemetery, Liberal, Kansas.[11]
