Biography

Marie was born in about 1853. She married George Mason in 1870.^[1][2] She passed away in 1906.^[3][4][5] In the Wairarapa Daily Times September 1906

The death took place, at Petone, on Thursday night of Mrs G.M. Mason, relict of the late Mr G M Mason of this town. The deceased lady, who resided in Masterton for about 5 years, has suffered a lingering illness, and underwent 2 operations, in the hope of securing relief from her complaint. She was staying with her daughter, Mrs W. Moore, at the time of her death. She was 53 years of age and leaves a grown-up family of 8 to mourn their loss. The funeral will be held at Masterton tomorrow.

There is also a Maria Mason died in 9/9/1906 aged 31 in the Masterton Cemetery. This would mean she was born in 1875. In 1906 in the Wairarapa Daily Times it said Maria Mason had a 9 room dwelling in Albert St in Masterton when she died. Georges wife and estate ? I think the date is incorrect. If she was 53 when she died, she was born in 1853. I think she is the Mary Buckman from Sussex born 1855. Samuel Ridley Buckman, George’s partner was also born in Sussex. Probably a relative.

Thanks for the information. My grandmother married in Christchurch NZ in 1883. I know she was born in Sussex and have found her in the 1871 UK census but have not found her in 1881. I suspect she may have travelled (alone or with a relative?) to NZ to visit family but I have not found a shipping record.
