William G. Buckner served 7 terms (one 1 year, one 1.5 year and five 4 year) on the Orange County Board of Supervisors. First elected to represent the Barbour District in 1901, he was re-elected in 1902, 1903, 1907, 1911, 1915, and 1919. In his final election in 1919 he had a surprise last minute opponent. Jessie Buell Hamm nearly pulled off the upset as the incumbent won re-election by just 16 votes.
In total Buckner served twenty-two and a half years making him the longest serving Supervisor for Barbour District/District 1, and the longest serving countywide until being eclipsed by Monroe Waugh and Lindsay Gordon a half century later. Buckner was a prominent business man and president of Citizens National Bank of Orange for a number of years including at the time of his death.
