Biography

Thomas was the eldest son of Richard Buckner and is mentioned in his will. He passed away in 1587/8, based on the probate of his will and his burial record. He is often called Thomas Buckner of Whitley in contemporary records. A heralds visitation shows that he was married to Dorothy Anne, daughter of William Anne of North Aston.^[1] Her will identifies her as the widow of Thomas.^[2] From these two wills, we can list the known children (several with known christenings in Cumnor parish records) as:

• Anne (ch. 7 July 1564 Cumnor, m. George Goulding)
• John (was aged abt. 40 in 1606 deposition, so b.ca. 1566, later "of Abingdon")
• Adam (ch. 14 Sep 1568 Cumnor, dead in nephew's 1644 will)
• Lettice (m. William Ruffin)
• Phillip
• Edward (d. 1645, Pusey, Berks.)
• Anthony

(Note that the birth order is unclear. Thomas seems to have inherited the freehold at Whitley and so may have been the eldest, but John was the executor of their father's will, which does not mention Thomas.)

Curiously, no wills have been found in the next generation and only one administration, for Edward in 1645, when he lived in Pewsey, Berks. (His administrators were Thomas and George Goulding, probably the sons of his sister Anne.) This is somewhat puzzling, since both Thomas and John seem to have had substantial estates, but it might be due to the disturbances of the Civil War of the 1640s.
