Up until 1974 the county was just Sussex. In 1974 the county was split into West Sussex and East Sussex. So for any dates before 1974 just use Sussex. I'll have a good look at Richard's profile once the Clean-a-Thon is over as all a bit manic at the moment!

If anyone can help me to clarify the Sussex vs. West Sussex distinctions, I'd be grateful! I'm used to dealing with counties and names changing every few years in the 1800's in North Carolina, but I doubt that's a thing in the U.K. On a map, it looks as if Chichester is indeed West Sussex, but...? (and: is it important?)
I just had to adopt poor Richard, because, well--he is related, but not through my paternal (Buckner) side, interestingly enough, it's through my maternal maternal...those gosh-darned European folks...!
