Biography

William was born in 1817.[1] It is sometimes claimed that he died in 1913,[2] but he is not known in any census after 1870 and John J. Mills was appointed his administrator in Putnam County, Tennessee on 1 Feb 1875,[3] so he most likely died that year.

He was a signatory to an 1839 petition by Overton, Jackson, and White Co. TN residents to establish what would become Putnam Co.[4] He also signed a second petition for it in 1841.[5] He was a witness in an 1854 court case.[6]

The account ledgers of Isaac Buck's store in Putnam Co. mention William a number of times from 1836-1844. On occasion a James Buckner made a purchase on his account. Two other Buckners, Coleman and Benjamin (possibly a mistranscription of "Berry"), made purchases during the same period.[7] These could be William's brothers, though no direct proof of this is known. Their ages would be consistent with their being sons of a William Buckner who was enumerated in the 1820 census of neighboring Jackson count`y, and Coleman's tombstone states that he was born in Jackson Co.[8]

He appeared in White Co. in the 1840 census.[9] He gave his age as between 20 and 29 years, with 2 boys under 5, and a woman aged from 20-29, presumably his wife Catherine who was born in 1815.

Research Notes

His surname is frequently mistranscribed in the 1840, 1850, and 1870 censuses. The first name is often given as "George," but this is not known in any primary sources.

William was probably a son of William and Polly Buckner of Jackson County, Tennessee. William Sr. lived there in 1820[10] and bounds of William Sr.'s property are mentioned in that county in 1824 and 1827.[11] A Polly Buckner is listed in the 1830 census of White County[12] and she is often interpreted as William Sr.'s widow. William Jr. seems to have inherited her property.

In an 1854 deposition for a court case in Jackson Co., he stated that his age was around 41.[13]

In the 1860 census, he was in Putnam Co. and gave his age as 46, so most evidence supports a birth year around 1814. His birth place is also given as Kentucky.[14]

Buckner-963 and Buckner-748 appear to represent the same person because: Other than the dubious first name "George" on one of them, these are obviously identical.

Duplicate of Buckner-748 - these should be merged.
