In her later years, she became a keen Bowls player and went to Australia with the Tokoroa Woman's Bowling Team. As a girl, Violet was very striking in looks, tall, with thich black hair and large violet-blue eyes, fringed with thick lashes. She possibly got her name for those violet eyes. She had known hard times but never showed bitterness, always with a ready smile and joke and a word of encouragement to friends and family. Violet was active to the day she died. She kept a flower and vegetable garden neat and tidy and productive. When her sister Gladys died of cancer, she donated a substantial sum of money to Cancer research, but insisted that it be "from the Buckton Family". She encouraged her family in their education and recieved just reward with the years, as her her family took up professions.
