Biography

Eva Gladys May Budd was born on 21 Mar 1909 on her parents' homestead at Sec 20 T45 R11 W3M near Keatley, Saskatchewan, Canada. Eva was the first child of Albert Budd and Olive Nolan.

On 1 Jun 1911 Eva was living with her parents and one sibling on the homestead at Sec 20, T45 R11 W3M, Douglas, in Saskatchewan, Canada.[1] Her maternal grandfather and two uncles (Herbert Budd and Victor Nolan) were also living with them.

On 1 Jun 1916 Eva was living with her parents and two siblings on the homestead at Sec 20, T45 R11 W3M, Douglas, Saskatchewan, Canada.[2]

On 1 Jun 1921 Eva was living with her parents and two siblings on the homestead at Sec 20, T45 R11 W3M, Douglas, Saskatchewan, Canada.[3]

Eva left school at age 14 to work outside the home as a farm labourer. She described herself as a "maid" and her duties would have included a variety of chores inside the home and around the farm. The work was difficult and the pay was poor - about $10 a month.[4]

On 1 Jun 1926 Eva was working on a farm at N1/2 Sec 7 T44 R11 W3M near North Battleford, Saskatchewan. She was listed as a domestic in the household of Charles Laughlin, his wife Gertrude and their six children.[5]

In about 1930 Eva was invited to travel west with a family friend. Mrs. Storgard had returned to Saskatchewan from her home in the Slocan Valley, British Columbia, for surgery and convalescence. Since she would continue to need help after returning home, she asked Eva to accompany her. With an offer of pay double what she could earn in Saskatchewan, Eva readily accepted the opportunity.[4]

On 1 June 1931 Eva was living on the Storgard farm in Slocan, B.C. (Frederick, Estrid and their three children). Her occupation was Domestic Servant.[6]

On 25 Oct 1935 Eva married local Slocan bachelor Archie Rae in Nelson, B.C.[7] They made their home in Slocan and had one child.

On 22 Jun 1949 Eva was widowed when Archie died in a tragic work-related accident.[8]

Eva was an active resident of the Slocan community for most of her remaining years. She enjoyed excellent health in part due to lots of walking and gardening. After outliving many of her friends and neighbours, she eventually moved into a care facility in Castlegar, British Columbia, at age 90.[4]

Eva died on 25 Aug 2007 at age 98 in Trail, British Columbia, following a brief illness.[4]
