Biography

William Thomas Turton Budd was born in the Hyandra Hotel at Lake Cargelligo . in Western Nsw on the 14th of June 1876, He grew up and attended school in the township and was the oldest of nine siblings to his parents William and Hellen Ann , leaving school at the age of14 , he travelled a distance of some 55 miles to the town of Hillston Nsw where on the first of January 1891 he took up the position of Junior letter carrier at the newly opened Post Office, this was to be the start of a career with the Post Master Generals Department, spending his whole working life in their employ and becoming Postmaster in a number of New South Wales towns.In 1901 he was working in Whitton Nsw where the Robertson family owned a local Hotel, he became engaged to their daughter Lydia, and on the 8th of August 1901 he married Lydia Robertson at Saint Johns church of England Whitton Nsw, they had 8 children together Coral 1902 Wagga, William John1904 Wagga, Clive Alfred 1906 Narrandera, Edna May 1908 Narrandera, Allan Leslie 1909 Goulburn, Jessie Helen 1912 Rozelle, Thomas George 1914 Hurstville and Norman Turton 1916 Hurstville.In 1926 while Postmaster at Bathurst Nsw, his wife Lydia passed away on the 10th of November of that year, which left him in the posisition of having to bring up his young family over the following years as he became Postmaster of Taree, Tamworth and finally Bulahdelah Nsw, where he worked until he retired. After retirement he moved to Newcastle Nsw, living at 20 Shelly street Mayfield for a number of years then New Iambton, before due to ill health going to live with his daughter Edna and her husband Walter at their home in the Suburb of Merewether.Looking back he had dedicated his life to his job and bringing up his family, having left Lake Cargelligo as a 14 year old boy, although keeping in touch through correspondence and receiving visitors, he never ever got to return to his hometown, although he always said that it held a place in his heart. He died in Newcastle on the 6th of May 1960, one month before his 84th birthday and is buried in the Hamilton, Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle Nsw.
