Biography

Very little is known of Jennie Buffington who was born about 1778.

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that she was daughter of Ellis Buffington; there is no known documentation that identifies her father; he's been detached. Ellis Buffington did have a daughter named Jennie b. 1818; she was the wife of Charles Dougherty and John Alberty.

Jennie married Richard Fields about 1793, one of several plural wives. [1] The Eastern Cherokee application of granddaughter Nancy Blythe Bean listed twelve children of Richard, but did not specify which children belonged to which wife. [2] Her death date and location are unknown, but according to granddaughter Nancy Bean she died before 1851. [3]

Children

According to Emmet Starr, the children of Richard Fields Jr. and Jennie Buffington were George, Nannie, Elizabeth, John, and Ezekiel. The only children who can be positively identified based on information from Eastern Cherokee applications and the Pioneer Papers are Nannie, Moses, and Ezekiel. Researcher James HIcks believes that Dempsey was their son and that George was not.

  6. John Fields 1802 - ? m. Elizabeth Wells
  7. Dempsey Fields, born Abt. 1806 in Cherokee Nat. East; died before 1880; married Julia Harris

Research Notes

The Eastern Cherokee applications of two descendants include garbled translations of the Cherokee names for members of this family, so "Jennie" becomes "Ghi Na" and the Cherokee word for "field" which is tlo-ge-s-i became "Klauggs Ky." There are no records that show that any member of this family ever used any Cherokee name. "Fields" was an English name, never Cherokee.

Where is documentation to connect her to Ezekiel? This appears to be a duplicate of Buffington-252 whose parents are unknown.

The narrative cites nothing for Ellis Buffington as father. Anyone know where this identification comes from?

No documentation to connect this Jennie with anyone; no documentation for supposed father.

I didn't put Ellis Buffington. I have no information as to a parent. My information came from Bell or Starr's genealogies.

Okay, I will detach him. There are a few Ellis Buffingtons that he might be a duplicate of....

Much more likely that Jennie was the daughter of Ezekiel Buffington and an unknown Cherokee woman, but nothing more than supposition.

What's the evidence that she might have been daughter of Ezekiel?
posted by Jillaine Smith
No evidence other than he was the Buffington in the right place at the right time.

The Cherokee name was only found in the tree referenced as source #4. I have no other sources that have that name.

What is the source for the Cherokee name. It does not conform to Cherokee syllabary, so I'm trying to figure out the proper spelling.
