Biography

William Bugg is an Indigenous Australian.

William Bugg was the 4th child of James Bugg and his Worimi Aboriginal wife Charlotte, born in 1841 his birth was registered in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia. He wasn't baptised until 21 September 1848,^[1] the day that James Bugg and Charlotte Bugg were married in Port Macquarie. The baptism certificate gives his birth date as 7 January 1841^[2].

William did not go to school and remained illiterate, becoming a farm labourer in 1861^[3]when his mother died, and then a farmer at Monkerai, in 1864, where his father had leased land and called it Bugg Farm.

In the same year of 1864, on 31 May (see ref.1 for the date), William married Emily Graham, with the marriage registered at Dungog, New South Wales. Ancestry Family Tree 112474653 has a copy of his marriage certificate with the date and location confirmed as above and the usual places of residence for William a Bachelor and Emily a Spinster was Monkerai.

From 1864 to 1885, they had children whose births were registered as follows: Samuel (1864-1879), Jane (1866), Adelaide/Hannah (c1868), William (1869), Elizabeth (1871-1872), Thomas (1873), James (1877), John (1880), Joseph (1882), Rachel (1885) (see ref.1).

William died on 10 February 1896, with his death registered at Taree, New South Wales. The specific date is given in reference 1 with his occupation as Labourer. His ADI record confirms his parents as James and Charlotte. His Death Certificate, sighted in the above Ancestry Family Tree 112474653, has the same 10 February 1896 death date and location Taree, with his age as 52. He was buried on 11 February 1896 at Taree. He was born near Gloucester, NSW; married at Dungog, and 7 children's names are given with their ages at the time of his death. ^[4]
