Biography

Marguerite Bergeron dit Barthélemy, dit Gaudreau was born around 1720. [1] Her parents are unknown.

It is believed that François and Marguerite were married around 1740 in Acadie and had 2 sons: François and Alexis. According to historian André-Carl Vachon, their sons François and Alexis were with a group of Acadians that left Miramichi by boat in October 1757 and arrived at the port of Quebec on 16 October 1757. [2]

Research Notes

This Marguerite is not the daughter of Barthelemy Bergeron and Marguerite Dugas. Their daughter Marguerite was engaged to François Roy as shown in the 1739 census but married Bonaventure Godin around 1740.

More research is needed to prove that the François Roy that was married to Marguerite was the son of François Roy and Marie Bergeron. There are conflicting opinions.

At her son Alexis' marriage in October 1771, she is named Marguerite Godreau and is listed as deceased.

Alexis Roy, fils de feu François Roy et de défunte Marguerite Godreau, épouse Marguerite Janson, fille de Thomas Janson et de défunte Marie Josephe Girouard, le 28 octobre 1771 à L'Assomption.[3]

At her son François’ marriage on 4 July 1763, she is named Marguerite Bijot and is listed as deceased.

François Roy fils de François et de defunte Marguerite Bigot de la pariosse de Ste. Anne de l’acadie (illegible) .[4]

According to researcher Marcel Walter Landry, Marguerite Bergeron (Bijou) dit Barthélemy dit Gaudreau was the daughter of Barthelemy Bergeron (parents unknown) and an unnamed mother. She married François Roy (François Roy & Marie Josephte Bergeron) and they had 2 children: François and Alexis.[5]

Karen Theriot Reader citing Dictionnaire généalogique des familles acadiennes, draft version, mentions that Marguerite Barthélemy (Bergeron) appears on the 1739 Census of Rivière St. Jean, Acadia as the fiancée of François Roy and that apparently they did not marry. [6] [7] Marguerite Bergeron, daughter of Barthelemy, married Bonaventure Godin the following year. [8]

PRDH : François Roy (No parents given) and Marguerite Gaudreau (No parents given) married in Acadie before 1760 and they had one child, Alexis who married Marguerite Janson. [9]
