Biography

James was born before 1847. In 1862 he joined the 1st Confederate Battalion or 1st Battalion, CSA (Forney's), and was in company E. He was captured in Water Valley Mississippi on Dec 5. Along with 800 other prisoners of war, he was put aboard the steamship Minnehaha on about Dec 26 and taken up the river to the Alton Military Prison. When the boat arrived on January 9, many of the 800 men were ill. James died on 6 Feb 1863 of variola (smallpox). His name is on the monument at the Confederate Cemetery in Alton.

Research Notes

no James Bullards in Alabama Census 1850 or 1860. He could be from Kentucky or Tennessee. Because of the unusual middle name, it's worth looking into Bullard-1445 (unsourced as of June 2019) as a possible grandfather.
