Bennett was born in 1836. He passed away in 1909.
Bennett was a First Sgt. of Company C 43rd N.C. Infantry Regiment C.S.A. He volunteered at the outbreak of the Civil War, and served the duration with only a few trips home. He often said he opposed the war; he said he did not aim at a single person nor did he kill anyone. He received not even the slightest wound. He lived a long life still believing war was a very poor way to solve the slave problem.
