Biography

George Bulmer came free to the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

George was born in 1814 and baptised on 5 Jun 1814.[1] He was the son of Richard Bulmer and Elizabeth Beswick living at Lockton, Yorkshire. He passed away in 1887. He is buried in the Woola Woola Cemetery, Kolodong, New South Wales.[2]

On 24 Dec 1834, George married Hannah Cook in Filey, Yorkshire, England.[3]

In the 1841, England Census, George (25), his wife Hannah (25) and daughter Elizabeth (9), and sons John (3) and Beswick (1) were recorded in the civil parish of Weaverthorpe, Buckrose, Yorkshire.[4]

George, an agricultural labourer aged 29 and his family arrived on the St Vincent, 31 Jul 1844.[5] He is recorded on his entitlement certificate as being a native of Lockton, Yorkshire with his parents Richard and Elizabeth deceased. His religion was Episcopalian and he could not read or write. He had a brother Thomas Bulmer in the colony. Along with George on the St Vincent, were Hannah Bulmer aged 32, farm servant, native of Billington, Yorkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Cook. Her father was still alive at the time. Hannah could read and write. Also in the family group were John aged 6, baptised 8 Oct 1837; Bezwick aged 4, baptised 24 Nov 1939 and Elizabeth aged 9.[6]

In 1846, the following incident occurred involving George and his brother Thomas.

PERJURY.
Dennis Duneen was indicted for having, on the 7th of August last, committed wilful and corrupt perjury, by falsely accusing one George Bulmer of setting fire to a hay stack.
It appeared by the evidence adduced in this case that Mr. Christian having had a hay stack burnt down under such circumstances as led to the conclusion that the fire was the work of an incendiary, had offered a reward of £50 in the Sydney Morning Herald. The prisoner about the time had quarrelled with George Bulmer, and having heard of the reward he accused the latter of burning the hay stack, stating that he had heard him admit his guilt to his brother Thomas Bulmer. The above facts were proved, and it was shown beyond question that the brothers were not together at the time the prisoner swore he had heard the admission of guilt alluded to.
The Jury convicted the prisoner, who was sentenced to be transported for seven years,[7][8]

George's first wife, Hannah passed away on 16 Apr 1849.

In 1850, George married the young and recently arrived Irish Famine Orphan, Isabella McArdle.[9] With George, Isabella had the following children.

  1. George Bulmer (1851-1923)
