Anne Bulmer was born at Wilton in Cleveland, Yorkshire, England, about 1552, daughter of Sir Ralph and Anne (Tempest) Bulmer.[1][2] She married, first, about 1572, Anthony Welbury of Castle Eden (died 5 November 1596), son of Simon and — (Morland) Welbury. She married, second, in 1598,[3] Sir Gerard Lowther of Lowtherstown (dsp 14/6 October 1624, judge).[4][5][6]

According to Welbury of Castle Eden pedigree, Anne Bulmer, "reputed dau. & co-heir of Sir Ralph Bulmer of Wilton in Cleveland, co. Ebor. knt. whom he never acknowledged."[7] Sir Ralph Bulmer refused to acknowledge Anne as his daughter; according to Welbury and Bulmer pedigrees;[8] so MAY not be the daughter of Sir Ralph, but we may never know.

On 30 September 1573, Anthony Welbery and Anne his wife granted to Walter Cawood of 5 parts of the property in Thornholme, Yorkshire.[9]

On 1 October 1573, a sale by Anthony Welbery and Anne his wife to Walter Cawood of the property in Thornholme, Yorkshire, was recorded.[10]

One curious document casting doubt regarding Anne's paternal heritage is from about 1582-1583 [25 Elizabeth I], that held recorded depositions regarding conveyances of lands in Castle Eden, Sherraton, Hutton Henry (Hewton), Durham, by Simon Welberye to Anthony, his son, in consideration of his marriage with Anne Sands.[11][12] She is called Sands here, suggesting her paternal biological family was actually the Sandys (Sandes, Sands) family.

In 1599, the case of Bond v Welbury was recorded. The plaintiff was John Bonde of Dissington, Northumberland, yeoman; the defendants were Anne Welburie, widow, John Edon and Ralph Sigswicke. The case was regarding the refusal to pay debt claimed by plaintiff as due from deceased husband of first defendant: Durham, Northumberland.[13]

In an undated document (recorded between 1558 and 1603), was the case of Hildesley v Lawson. The plaintiffs were Francis Hildesley, esq and Johan Hildesley his wife, Marmaduke Constable, esq and Frances Constable his wife, William Whytmotre and Dorothy Whytmotre his wife, Christopher Rowe and Bridget Rowe his wife, Reginald Farley and Barbara Farley his wife, Anthony Welbury and Ann Welbury his wife. The defendants were Raff Lawson, esq and Elizabeth Lawson his wife. The subject was a claim by descent in coparcenary. The lordship of Broughe [Brough] and Formebrough, Yorkshire formerly the estate of William Broughe, esq deceased from whom plaintiffs deduce their pedigree.[14]

An undated pleading from the sixteenth century mentions Anthony Welbery, Anne Welbery, Anthony Gerrard, John Eden, John Welbery junior, William Dodd, John Bone, John Welberie senior and Ralph Sidgesweeke.[15]
