Anne Bulmer was born[1] about 1505 in Yorkshire, England, daughter of John Bulmer (1491–1537) and Anne Bigod (1483–1531).[1]
Anne married Matthew Boynton (born in 1504 in York, Yorkshire; son of Thomas Boynton and Cecilia (Strangeways) Boynton) in 1520 in Barnston, Yorkshire.[2] Their children were:
Matthew died on 31 July 1540. He left a will dated 29 July 1540 which mentions Anne and the children, Anne being one of the executors.[3]
There were four children at the time of Matthew's death in 1540, and his son and heir, Thomas, is said by Dugdale to be 3 years and 44 days old at his father's Inquisition Post Mortem, so born in 1537. However, History of Parliament online says that Thomas was born in 1523 and was married to his third wife by 1556.[4] History of Parliament quotes Foster's Yorkshire pedigrees which states Thomas was 18 years and 44 days old at his father's inquisition.[5]
Clearly the Inquisition Post Mortem is the area of the discrepancy. Both Dugdale and The Genealogist transcription have the age as 3 years "Boynton, Mathew, ob. 31 July 32 Hen. 8. — Inq. at Malton in Rydall 16 Sep. 32 Hen. 8. — York — Thomas, is aet. 3 ; 3 daughters".[6] Thomas was certainly under 17 at the time of his father's will as his sisters were given a lease "until such tyme that my son Thomas be of thage of xvij yeres". Also his first marriage was dissolved due to non consummation, the bride being a minor, so probably a child marriage. The 1537 birth date seems most likely at the moment.
