Maud was born in 1894.[1] She is the daughter of Francis Bulmer and Mary Smith. She passed away in 1965. She was buried on 12 Nov 1968 in the Redcliffe Cemetery, Queensland. [2][3]
Maud was born into a blended family from four marriages. She was the second child and eldest daughter of her father's second marriage. Francis' first wife was also a widow. Her mother was twice married. From these marriages Maud had six siblings, and eleven half or step siblings who were Campbells (five), Bulmers (two), and Wrights (four). It is not known how these families arranged themselves and regarded each other. Maud's daughter, Molly, regarded the Wright sister's at least as her aunties.
Maud grew up in a farming family. For four years while Maud was a teenager, from 1908 until it closed in 1912 and they left the district, Maud's father was the licensee of the Bexhill Hotel, a few kilometers from Numulgi, where she was born.[4] This would have given the young Maud a glimpse of the lifestyle which she would become a part of after her marriage to Peter O'Reilly.
In 1910, Maud caused a stir by running away to Sydney.
Inquiry is requested to trace the whereabouts of Maud Bulmer, who left her home at Bexhill, Lismore, on the 5th instant, and came to Sydney, per s.s. “Orara,” from Byron Bay. She is 16 years of age, 5 feet high, stout build, dark complexion, black hair and eyes, short medium nose, slight scar between eyes; dressed in a light-colour print dress, white straw hat with flowers. Supposed to be in company of a farmer named John Murphy. He is 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, very dark complexion, black eyes, black hair: usually dresses well; smart appearance. Inquiry at the instance of her father, Francis Bulmer, at above address.[5]
In 1913, Maud married Peter O'Reilly.[6] They had six children.
When they were married Peter was a store keeper in Harlin in the Brisbane valley. Some time before the birth of Elizabeth ing 1917, they went to live at the Bulmer farm in Murwillumbah. Two more children, Edward and Kevin were born there.
In 1922, Peter O'Reilly went to Kin Kin on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland with the mission of purchasing a dairy farm. Many Northern Rivers farmer's were making this move with local available opportunities becoming limited. Peter came back the owner of the Kin Kin Hotel. This was the start of a permanent lifestyle for the family as they moved from hotel to hotel as they bettered the family circumstances and raised their family.
Maud O’Reilly died in Kilcoy District Hospital on 11 Nov 1968[7] and
Although Maud is spelt with an 'e' on her birth record, she has been known throughout her life as Maud without an 'e'.[8]
The birth certificates for Mervyn, Francis and Molly record that Maud was born at Numulgi(x2) and Bexhill(1) in New South Wales which are locally close.
